Founded in 1956 by Leon Gregory, Gregory Sign Advertising supplied signage needs in and around central Kansas, specializing in hand lettered signs, outdoor advertising billboards and screen printed signs.
In the 1960's, Leon expanded the scope of the business even further into the fabrication and servicing of electrical backlit and neon signs. Leon was also an early adopter of a new adhesive backed film technology, developed by the 3M Company, making extensive use of the reflective material for outdoor advertising billboards. Leon used standard vinyl material for screen printing for all kinds of decals. He recognized the potential to the Sign Industry these new materials held.
In the 1970's Gregory became a Trade Only supplier. Electrical signage, billboards and hand lettering were phased out. Screen printing and die cutting capabilities were expanded. Leon changed the focus of the business from a local sign shop to a national provider of wholesale vinyl graphics and die cut vinyl lettering to the sign industry. Leon saw that the Sign Industry needed a reliable national wholesale supplier of finished graphics. This allowed a local sign company to offer products to their customers they were previously unable to provide. Gregory was “Trade Only” before “Trade Only” was a concept.
In the 1980's, the new technology of computer-controlled cutters accelerated the adoption of pressure sensitive vinyl as an alternative to hand lettering. Gregory invested heavily in high speed computerized cutting equipment and became the major U.S. supplier of cut vinyl lettering in the Sign Industry. Our position of a Trade Only supplier was firmly established throughout the Sign and Graphics industry.
The Sign Making Materials and Supplies Distribution Division began as an additional service to our wholesale graphics customers. Gregory is a distributor of 3M, Trendfilm, Orafol, Signgold, R Tape, TransferRite, Clear Focus and other materials. Additionally, Gregory distributes for Mutoh Eco solvent inkjet printers, Graphtec cutting plotters, Flexi software and GFP laminators.
The 1990's, brought the new technology of full color digital printing. This technology opened the opportunity to expand our “Wholesale to the Trade” product line. Gregory was one of the first installations of the 3M Scotchprint Graphics digital printing systems. Gregory continues to invest in the latest high speed, large format digital printing and finishing equipment to serve the needs of our trade customers.
