Getting Started

Measuring Your Walls

Once you’ve selected the right material for your space, the next step is making sure your wallpaper is measured accurately for a perfect fit. Use these simple tips to guide your measuring process and set your project up for success.

1. Measure Width & Height

Using a tape measure, record the widest width and the highest height of the wall. (You do not need to include baseboards or crown molding.) If you have irregularly shaped walls, see below.

2. Repeat for Each Wall

Measure every wall you plan to cover. When it comes to windows and doors, they can be ignored as they will be trimmed out during installation.

3. Add Bleed

To ensure your printed design can be trimmed and installed seamlessly, it’s important to add bleed. We recommend adding 2-4” to the width and height of each wall you measure.

4. Calculate

The last step in the measuring process is to plug your recorded numbers into our graphics builder, where our calculator will determine square footage.

Measuring for Different Types of Walls

Standard Walls

For a standard wall, simply measure the full width and height. Ignore any baseboards, crown molding, or trim, just record the total wall surface area.

Walls With Obstacles

If your wall includes doors, windows, or other permanent fixtures, measure it as if the obstacles aren’t there. These areas will be trimmed out during installation.

Walls With Slants, Vaults, or Stairs

For walls that slope or have angled ceilings, measure to the tallest and widest points only. This ensures full coverage, even in irregular areas.

Multiple Walls

If your design spans across multiple walls, measure the tallest height once, then add together the widths of each wall to get your total width.

If you’re unsure about your measurements or have uniquely shaped walls, don’t worry, our team is here to help! Feel free to send us your dimensions, sketches, or photos, and we’ll review them to make sure everything is accurate before printing begins.

Preparing Your Wallpaper Files for Print

To get the best possible results, it’s important that your artwork is set up correctly before it is sent to print. If any of that sounds a little technical, don’t worry, we’re happy to take a look before printing to make sure your file is set up correctly and ready to go. You can also review our Print Guidelines for more tips and tricks below.

Frequently Asked Questions

What’s the difference between wallpaper and vinyl wallcovering?

Wallpaper is usually paper-based and ideal for residential or creative spaces where design and texture matter. Vinyl wallcovering is more durable, washable, and moisture-resistant, making it better for commercial or high-traffic areas.

What do “Type I,” “Type II,” and “Type III” mean when it comes to wallcoverings?

These types refer to the durability and thickness of wallcoverings: Type I: Light-duty, suitable for residential or low-traffic areas. Type II: Medium-duty, more durable and ideal for commercial spaces with moderate use. Type III: Heavy-duty, extremely durable for high-traffic or demanding commercial environments like hotels, hospitals, or retail spaces.

How do I clean my wallpaper?

Gently brush away loose debris with a soft brush or vacuum, then wipe with a damp microfiber cloth and mild soap and water for dirt or smudges.

Can wallpaper be removed or reused?

Peel-and-stick or temporary wallpapers can usually be removed easily. Standard vinyl or textured wallpapers may require careful removal and are typically not reusable.

Why do we design to a scale?

Designing to scale keeps your artwork at a manageable file size, which makes editing faster and prevents your computer from slowing down or crashing. It also ensures smoother file transfers and a more efficient production workflow on our end!

Can a photo from my phone work for a wall mural?

Possibly—to get the best results, use your phone's highest resolution settings and a tripod for stability. A 12-MegaPixel (MP) image can generally be printed up to 6-8 feet, while a 24MP image can be printed larger, around 12-14 feet.

What can I do - I have a favorite photo but it's not crisp enough?

There are a number of free photo editors that can be accessed online that will help you turn your photo into art. Some of our preferred options include: Picsart and BeFunky

Can I order a sample of wallpaper before  printing?

Yes! We have the option to order a sample of material before placing your order—we always want to make sure that your color is matching up with exactly what you want. You can find the cost within our printing guidelines here!
